Richard et Cie, Paris - An Enamelled Carriage Clock

The eight-day duration movement has the original silvered platform lever escapement and strikes the hours and half-hours on a gong, with a push button repeat at will to the top and is stamped to the backplate with the serial number 52 along with the trademark for Richard et Cie, a serpent entwined around a sword. The gilded case is beautifully decorated with coloured champleve enamel to the pillars, top, base and sides, along with the bowed and fluted handle, with the pillars topped by cast Corinthian capitals. Richard et Cie were well-known carriage clock makers and retailers in the late-Victorian period, sourcing the majority of their roulant blancs from the town of Saint-Nicolas-d’Aliermont, near Dieppe, from wher other fine makers, including Jacot and Drocurt, also obtained movements, albeit from their own workshops in the main.
